What Are ADHD Video Games?

Posted on

From cognitive behavioral therapy to medications, there are all kinds of ways ADHD can be treated, and the route of treatment can differ according to the patient. The available understanding and research into ADHD is an ever-evolving thing, so new treatments and forms of therapy are emerging as years go by. One of the newest forms of treatment, specifically for children, involves using video gaming as a way to encourage focus. If this is a new idea to you and you have a child with ADHD, you are bound to want to know more. Here's a look at some of the things you should know about ADHD video game therapy.

ADHD video games challenge people to learn self-control and concentration

ADHD video games are a different breed of video games than what people would assume to be associated with the technology. These games require the player to focus on a goal to win. The stronger their focus is on the objective or objectives at hand and the more concentrated they are on performing well to reach that objective, the more likely it is that they will win.

There have been numerous attempts to create video games that cater to people with attention and concentration problems, and most of them have a similar layout or set of objectives. People who have ADHD tend to struggle most with focus and concentration, which is why they have a difficult time staying still or controlling their behavior. The goal of these games is to show players with ADHD that they can achieve things if they learn how to control their focus and concentration.

Digital medicine is a relatively new way of treating ADHD

Up until 2018, there were only video games claiming to be effective at helping children with ADHD. However, there has been at least one game that has gained FDA approval as a legitimate form of treatment, and that is a game that was produced by Akili Interactive. This game was used in a study of 348 children to determine its effectiveness at improving concentration and self-control, and the studies did prove to be successful.

Digital medicine, which is a term created to describe therapy through technological ways, is rapidly becoming a more viable option for treatment for people with ADHD. More people have access to smartphones, tablets, and other devices than ever before, which means digital treatment could be extremely convenient.
